50% Off Criterion Collection Sale Is Now Live at Barnes & Noble

Overview

It’s a big week for deals. Amazon Prime Day has (somewhat ironically) been running all week long, and the Steam Summer Sale just kicked off. One thing I've been waiting for this entire time, however, is 50% off the Criterion Collection, and Barnes & Noble has finally turned that dream into a reality.

The deals aren’t entirely out of nowhere, as the Criterion Collection usually goes on sale every July. The benefit of that consistency, however, is that you can rest assured you’re getting some of the finest DVDs and Blu-rays for the best price.

50% Off Criterion Collection Summer Sale Now Live

This is your standard Criterion Collection Sale with a 50% discount across the board. That means 4K Blu-rays have dropped from $49.99 to $24.99, HD Blu-rays have dropped from $39.99 to $19.99, and DVDs have gone from $29.99 to $14.99. The site seems to be struggling a bit with the full roll-out of the sale, so if you see something without that 50% discount, I’d add to your cart or wait a bit to see if the price automatically updates.

Unfortunately, preorders aren't included – so that $599 Kubrick Collection isn’t dropping in price any time soon. However, we are still seeing 50% price cuts on bigger, already-released collections, like the 10-film Wes Anderson box set.

Details

Some newer releases that are getting the 50% price drop for the first time are Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value, Monty Python’s Life of Brian, and Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. Of course, there's never a bad time to grab classics like The Princess Bride.

While the deals are currently only available through Barnes & Noble (both online and in stores), I would expect to see Amazon match the new prices sooner rather than later. Do what you will with that information. In any case, unlike the bulk of this week’s sales, the Criterion Collection deals are expected to last a full month, so you have plenty of time to agonize over your choices.

There’s a Ridiculous Amount of Physical Media Deals Right Now

If you’re getting a full 50% discount on a Criterion release, you’re getting the best price possible on a new disc. The Criterion Collection has a somewhat standardized approach to discounts, offering you some peace of mind in addition to some of the best quality and bonus features.

However, if you are interested in a DVD or Blu-ray release outside of the collection, there's a strong chance you can find at least some kind of discount in Amazon's Prime Day Blu-ray deals.
